Equipment

  • Stovetop

Ingredients

  • 4 cloves minced garlic
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 2 tablespoons Italian seasonings
  • 1 tablespoon basil dried
  • 2 tablespoons garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon granular sugar replacement Swerve
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons reduced fat parmesan cheese
  • 16 ounces ground mild italian sausage
  • 3 slices bacon
  • cup fat-free half and half
  • ½ cup chicken broth low sodium

Instructions

  • Grab a large pot and grease the bottom with cooking spray, or drizzle in a little olive oil. Heat the pot to a medium heat. Once heated, add the minced garlic, and cook for about a minute, until fragrant.
  • Once the garlic is ready, pour in the crushed tomatoes. Add all of the seasonings (including the lemon juice, parmesan and sugar, just not the half and half), and stir to combine. Bring the sauce up to a boil then reduce the heat to low and keep it at a simmer.
  • Heat a pan over medium high heat, greased with cooking spray. Add the sausage and break it up while cooking. Once fully cooked, add it to the tomato sauce.
  • Bring the pan back up to a medium / medium high heat and add the bacon. Cook the bacon to your desired wellness then cut up the bacon as much as you would like. I tried to get the pieces as small as I could. Then, add the bacon to the tomato sauce and sausage, giving it a stir.
  • Make sure the sauce is still at a simmer and simmer for 30 minutes to 4 hours. About 10 minutes before ready to eat, add the half and half and stir that to combine into the sauce.
  • Start off adding just a very small amount of broth until your desired thickness/thinness. Let it simmer with the rest of the sauce and add more as you need it. You can even skip the broth if you do not like your sauce thinned out.
