BBQ chicken thighs baked in the oven are a quick and easy dinner that come out extremely flavorful and delicious!

I love chicken thighs in the oven; however, I also love making these in the air fryer or in the crock pot.

I serve my BBQ chicken thighs with some roasted red potatoes and broccoli.

Why I Love BBQ Chicken Thighs

It is no secret that I am a huge chicken fanatic. I love chicken thighs as they are always nice and tender. Plus, they are pretty easy to make and pretty hard to mess up.

I have made sweet and sour chicken thighs, garlic butter chicken thighs and some made in the instant pot. But, my favorite way to make chicken thighs has been in the oven with some BBQ sauce.

  • Tender
  • Delicious
  • Flavorful

There are not that many ingredients; therefore, you can really make this recipe your own. Plus, they make for great leftovers as they are so tender.

Ingredients

Let's go over some ingredients.

  • Chicken Thighs (boneless and skinless)
  • Oil
  • Salt / Pepper
  • Italian Seasonings
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Paprika
  • BBQ Sauce
ingredients

Tips and Tricks

  • These are sweet; however, if you want something spicy, try substituting buffalo sauce.
  • The chicken thighs will be done early; however, if you can broil for a little extra longer to keep it a bit crispy.
  • These are amazing in any dish from salads, to wraps, to just eating them with a fork and knife.
  • Try this out with a different cut of chicken if you want a leaner meal.
  • Be sure the chicken thighs are even in size to cook evenly.

How to Make Oven Baked Chicken Thighs

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Line a baking tray with aluminum foil. Then, place an oven safe rack on top. I use this one. Be sure the spray the rack with cooking spray.

Pat the chicken thighs dry with a paper towel. Then, drizzle olive oil over them and rub to coat. Sprinkle the seasonings on the chicken and rub to evenly distribute them.

Sprinkle the seasonings on the chicken and rub to evenly distribute them.

Then, place the chicken thighs on the rack, skin side up. Then, brush with the BBQ sauce. Cook for 30 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees.

Broil for the last 2-3 minutes for a crispier top. I think mine come out crispy enough; but, it is up to you.

However, you do want to make sure you grab a meat thermometer to know exactly when the chicken is done.

How Long to Cook Chicken Thighs

I use boneless, skinless chicken thighs. These will take about 30 minutes to cook.

However, if you want to use bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs, they will take about 40 minutes.

Recommended Sauces and Seasonings

I like to make mine sweeter with some BBQ sauce. Plus, I keep it pretty neutral flavoring with just some Italian and garlic. However, if you like things spicy, substitute the sauce with some hot sauce. But, you can also add cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper, or any other spicy seasonings to turn up the heat.

If you prefer, you can leave out the sauce all together. The chicken thighs will still be delicious from the seasonings. However, you can also squeeze a little lemon juice on top for a fresh flavor.

I also like to make these Mexican style with some fajita seasonings and a squeeze of lime juice. These are perfect to slice up for tacos!

how to store leftovers

Be sure to let the chicken cool to room temperature. Then, place chicken in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days.

To store the chicken for over three days, place each piece of chicken in a plastic baggie. Then, put in the freezer for up to three months.

how to reheat this chicken

You can pop the chicken back in the oven for about 5 minutes at 400 degrees. However, you can also air fry them for five minutes.
