The best old-fashioned, southern sweet potato casserole is my gluten free version made with gluten-free marshmallows and sweet potatoes. This recipe has the perfect amount of sweetness to it and pairs great with some nuts on top.
It is time for the holidays, which means it's time to break out my favorite fall side dishes. I am very picky when it comes to my side dishes and I have perfected my favorite ones.
This southern sweet potato casserole is layer with smooth and creamy potatoes. Then, it is topped with mini marshmallows and my secret crumble. This is the perfect side dish for Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter.
My gluten free sweet potato casserole is quite simple to make; however, it really packs a punch. This is one your whole family will be asking for seconds.
Making the Best Old-Fashioned Sweet Potato Casserole
This is your classic sweet potato casserole recipe; however, it is made with gluten-free ingredients.
I typically like my dishes pretty sweet; however, you can hold back the sugar, add more cinnamon or top it with nuts to cut the sugar taste.
If you prefer a different potato, try my Greek yogurt mashed potatoes or scalloped potatoes! Either one of those pairs well with my honey roasted carrots or maple bacon Brussels sprouts.
Essential Ingredients
You will need to boil the potatoes on the stovetop. Then, bake the entire casserole in the oven.
- Sweet Potatoes
- Brown Sugar
- Whole Milk
- Mini Marshmallows
- Butter
- Flour
- Cinnamon
- Vanilla Extract
- Garlic Salt
How Many Sweet Potatoes Do I Need?
For a side dish, I generally like to have one pound of potatoes for every three people
- 5 potatoes = 3 pounds = 9 people
The sizes of your potatoes may vary, which is why I like to measure them out.
Make sure to thoroughly wash the potatoes before beginning as they can be pretty dirty.
A Sweet Casserole
I love a sweet casserole and I always add brown sugar. I typically like my dishes pretty sweet; however, you can hold back the sugar, add more cinnamon or top it with nuts to cut the sugar taste. However, you can also substitute brown sugar or a brown sugar replacement such as Swerve.
I think the garlic salt really adds a depth of flavor; however, you can use regular salt. Always use some type of salt as it balances out the sweet flavor.
Prepping Ahead of Time
This is a great side dish to make as you can prepare it ahead of time. My southern sweet potato casserole heats up very well in the oven; therefore, you can prepare it up to two days in advance. However, I recommend leaving out the marshmallows until ready.
You can also make just the potatoes part and keep that in the fridge, in an airtight container for up to three days. Then, you will just need to finish off the recipe.
Adding a Crispy Finish
What sets my sweet potato casserole on top is my crispy crumble! It adds another level of texture and flavor to the potatoes. It is easy to make and the best part of the casserole. All you need to do it mix together softened butter, flour, sugar, cinnamon and salt. This will be sprinkled on top of the marshmallows before baking.
This is where you can add some nuts in as well. Chopped walnuts are perfect on this dish.
How to Make the Best Sweet Potato Casserole
Set butter out to soften and preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Cook and Mash the Sweet Potatoes
Wash, peel then cut potatoes into one-inch cubes.
Bring a pot of water, big enough for the potatoes, to a boil on the stove top. Once boiling, add in the potatoes and cook until done. It should take about 20 minutes and they should come out fork tender.
Mix all the ingredients together
While potatoes are cooking, combine all of the ingredients together for the crumble in a small bowl and set aside.
Drain the potatoes then, add then back into the empty pot. Add the remaining ingredients for the potatoes. Continue to stir and mash the potatoes until everything is combined and creamy.
Add to a Casserole dish and top with marshmallows
Grease a casserole dish. Add the potatoes to the bottom of the dish and spread to even out. Top with the marshmallows, in a single layer. Then, sprinkle in the crumble in small pieces.
Bake in the oven for about 30 minutes, until the marshmallows are golden. You can also broil the casserole if you like it more well done. Just keep an eye on it as it can burn quickly.
Leftover Casserole
What should you do with your leftover sweet potato casserole? Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Pop it back into the oven to heat up when ready to eat.
Making this an Easier Recipe
The bulk of this recipe is cooking and mashing up the potatoes; however, you can use canned yams. I do not prefer it; however, if you are in a pickle, go right ahead! You will need about 2.5 pounds for this recipe.
This is the perfect side dish for my instant pot rotisserie chicken.
