My newest obsession is sweet potatoes and these sweet potato fries, or wedges made in the air fryer. The perfect side to add to any dish!
I love making homemade fries in the air fryer, especially now with sweet potatoes! They are great with any dish, such as my air fried chicken fries. But, these air fryer sweet potato fries are also an amazing snack.
Making sweet potato wedges in the air fryer is a lot healthier than your classic deep fryer version. There is really not much oil required and they are not greasy at all. You get less fat and less calories for the same crispy fry.
How Is A Sweet Potato Different
A lot of people say that sweet potatoes are healthier for you. But, is that really true? Well, it depends what you are looking at! They have about the same calories and carbs. But, sweet potatoes have more fiber, vitamins and calcium. So, if you are making some air fryer fries, why not grab a sweet potato?
What Does A Sweet Potato Taste Like?
Compared to your typical potato, sweet potatoes taste a bit sweeter, hence the name. Although they are sweeter, an sweet potato fry can pair well with pretty much any dish you are making.
What You Need for Sweet Potato Wedges
You will obviously need an air fryer. I love my Ninja double basket. The one side is the perfect size to cook one serving of fries. You can also use a rack or toaster oven style air fryer; however, I do prefer the basket kind for this one.
- Sweet Potatoes
- Oil
- Seasoned Salt
Yes, it really is that simple to make the best air fryer sweet potato fries. I just like to throw on a little seasoned salt to keep it simple. Plus, the seasoned salt really brings out the best flavors of the fries. However, you can, of course, change up the flavoring depending on your preferences.
How to Make the Best Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
Start by thoroughly washing the sweet potatoes.
Cut them into wedges or French fry shapes. Be sure to make all the pieces even by cutting off any skinny portions. This way, they will cook evenly.
You can discard the excess; however, I will usually boil or bake any of the excess pieces for my dogs! The assistant loves her sweet potatoes.
Add the fries to a large boil. Then, fill with cold water and ice. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes. This step may be optional; however, I think it really makes the fries have the best texture!
After the 30 minutes, dump out the water and dry the potatoes as much as possible. Drizzle the oil over the potatoes, tossing to coat. Then, sprinkle on the seasoned salt, tossing to coat. However, you can add any of your favorite seasonings.
Preheat the air fryer to 380 degrees. Add the sweet potatoes fries into the air fryer basket. Try not to overcrowd the basket or let the potatoes touch. This will ensure they are cooked well and evenly.
Air fry for 10 minutes. Then, spray the fries with cooking spray and toss to flip them all over. Air fry for another 10 minutes or until desired wellness is reached.
Tips for Making the Best Fries
Cut the fries into even shapes - this will ensure an even cook. Cut off any skinny or excess portions and discard them. However, I do same the excess to give to my dogs!
Preheat the air fryer - otherwise the fries are sitting in a cold basket waiting to be cooked.
Do not overcrowd the basket - or let the potatoes touch as this will ensure they are cooked well and evenly.
Flip halfway through cooking - this will ensure both sides of the fries are cooked evenly.
Use your favorite seasonings - I just use seasoned salt to keep it simple and bring out the best flavors of the sweet potatoes; however, you can use your favorite seasonings.
